Description
Ability is a great title for this early march in traditional form that celebrates the youngest musician. Marches are wonderful tools to teach all sorts of musical concepts, and “Ability” is no exception. This one is a perfect “first” foray into the wide world of march music!
Program Notes
“Ability March” is a very easy march that only uses the first six notes of the Bb scale. It is intended to give you the opportunity to teach beginning students the march form, which they will encounter throughout their experience in band.
Successfully playing marches is a great learning experience for young band musicians. Students can learn everything they need to know about music and performance using marches as the vehicle to present many performance necessities such as good style, balance, blend, and overall musicianship. All these things will translate to other genres they will play in the future.
Like most traditional marches, I wrote this as tutti throughout, but I encourage you to use your own creativity to alter the orchestration to make the march have more variety and be more exciting to play and to listen to by the audience.
It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program.
