Description
Get ready for the high seas with this action-packed opener in C minor. Cleverly using a famous and catchy sea shanty, “Wayward Sailor” is an accessible work for the earliest of concert bands. A crowd-pleaser for sure, and a great way to get them inspired early!
Program Notes
Get ready to set sail on a musical adventure with “The Wayward Sailor”! This exciting piece is based on a nautical folk song that has found its way into our everyday lives.
The Percussion helps set the nautical mood from the start by using a “ship’s bell.” These bells can be easily purchased online; however, students can use the dome/crown of a suspended Cymbal with a stick for a similar effect. The Wind Chimes starting in M.29 reflect a nighttime sky as the low Brass are featured with the melody. There is an optional Timpani glissando in M.31-M.32 to simulate the rolling waves of the sea. The slapstick represents the crack of the sails as they capture the wind. Parts marked “2x only” at M.7 can be played both times to help reinforce the melody. Educators can throw in a history lesson about sailors and their folk songs for a splash of fun.
