Storming the Castle – Full Score

Newcomer Connor Dunford comes out swinging with this high-wire new work for the young band. Storm the castle and get lost in the drama with this new work – which features fun and engaging parts for each section of the band! We expect to be hearing from Connor a lot more in the future!

Program Notes

When I began writing the melody for this piece, I was inspired by the overwhelming size and power of many of the European armies during the Middle Ages. These armies were massive, and oftentimes had thousands or even tens of thousands of soldiers all marching into battle. Sure, they may not have had the fancy airplanes or submarines we have nowadays, but the incredible size alone of these armies was massively intimidating! In this piece, I tried to capture the dramatic scene of one of these massive armies storming a medieval castle and taking it over! Every section of the ensemble plays an active role in telling the story of this intense scene, from the bold melody introduced by the lower voices, to the engaging countermelodies in the middle voices, and the bombastic percussion writing. The piece culminates in the declaration of a major chord, signifying the end of an intense battle!
