Program Notes

During the summer I had my learner’s permit, I was exposed to some pretty hardcore city driving within just a couple of months. After plenty of interstate driving, I drove in Cincinnati and Pittsburgh (the latter being the most chaotic and confusing of the two). However, on a trip to visit some extended family in Georgia, I was exposed early to one of the most infamous cities in the nation to drive in: Atlanta. Atlanta is very, very busy, and the highways around the city are quite overwhelming, filled with a chorus of honking and a high dose of road rage! On top of all of this, in true Georgia fashion, a thunderstorm suddenly appeared that was so intense I could literally not see ten feet in front of the hood. Nonetheless, my learner’s permit days were filled with some pretty intense driving experiences!

Upon coming up with the opening statement of this piece, I was reminded of some of these minor disruptions that, when piled on top of each other, can make driving so, so aggravating. Whether it’s the loud accented moments, suspensefully aggravated melodies in the upper voices, glissandos in the middle voices, or interjections of the Brake Drum, I’ve hoped to bottle up some classic road rage and traffic delays into this piece! Every section plays a part in portraying the many “Minor Disruptions” that a driver can face at the wheel.
