Program Notes

“Dark Energy” was commissioned by a consortium of four school districts led by Jon Cormack, Jami Kleinert, Megan Zarchy, and Allison Buettner. This piece is a sequel to “Dark Matter.”

The work is inspired by the concept of dark energy. While it continues to be an area of scientific discovery, dark energy is the name for a mysterious force that is accelerating the expansion of the universe. Dark energy contains about 70% of the energy of the observable universe! By contrast, the matter that makes up stars, galaxies, and planets only accounts for roughly 5% of the total energy; the rest is composed of dark matter.
