Program Notes

“Out of the Box” was commissioned by the TX ATSSB Region 24 Middle School Symphonic Band in 2024, inspired by the idea of creativity, innovation, and the thrill of thinking in unexpected ways. The title reflects the idiom “thinking outside the box”—embracing fresh perspectives and breaking free from conventional constraints. I have always loved music and other art forms that are unique and not completely traditional.

The composition begins with a playful and quirky introduction, resembling the whimsical sound of a music box, as if stepping into a dreamlike carnival or a fantastical world. The sound is light and almost circus-like, capturing the sense of imaginative freedom that the piece celebrates. A jolting surprise in the Percussion section starts the fast main theme, which is lively, upbeat, and marked by a rhythmic drive that pushes forward with joyful determination. Throughout the piece, there are unexpected shifts, and every so often, the music is interrupted by playful 3/4 meter phrases, quoting the well-known jack-in-the-box nursery song, “Pop Goes the Weasel.”

“Out of the Box” is a celebration of creativity and unpredictability, encouraging everyone to step outside their comfort zones and relish breaking out of the ordinary.
