Program Notes

“A la Nanita Nana” is a beautiful Spanish lullaby also sung as a Christmas carol in Spanish-speaking communities all around the world. Its tender melody is first presented by the Viola section and accompanied with col legno in the Violin sections. As the piece continues, the hauntingly beautiful minor melody shifts to its major counterpart a few times until it returns to minor one final time, with strums reminding us of the Guitar, which would often accompany a vocalist singing this lullaby. This arrangement speaks tender love, kindness, and mercy, and is appropriately played year-round, but particularly lovely for December concerts.
