Program Notes
“Aruru Mi Niño” (Lullaby, My Child) is a traditional Cuban lullaby, arranged in honor of my grandmother, who immigrated to the United States with her family when she was fifteen. Although she could only bring a few possessions, the songs she learned as a girl stayed with her. I have many fond memories of music with her – hearing her nails clack on the piano keys as she played, going to the opera together, and learning to sing Cuban folk songs. She would sing “Aruru Mi Niño” as I fell asleep, and I now have the honor of rocking my own child to sleep with this melody. My grandmother was a true matriarch who loved her family fiercely, spoke out against injustice, and inspired us to reach not just for our own dreams, but for our dreams of a better world. This one is for you, Abuela.
