Janelle Zook Cunalata
Janelle Zook Cunalata received her Masters of Music degree from Sam Houston State and a BS in Music Education as well as an Oboe Performance Certificate from Penn State University. Heartfelt and creative music making in a context where performers are relaxed, engaged, and having a meaningful experience is Janelle’s passion. Janelle taught orchestra and band in public schools for 4 years in Southern Lehigh Bethlehem Area School Districts before moving to Ecuador where she taught large and small group music and composition lessons to students in Riobamba. While in Ecuador, Janelle expanded her musical endeavors in music composition, though improvisation has always been an integral part of her musical experience. Inspired by her students in Ecuador, Janelle began her composition career writing for string orchestra. Since returning stateside in 2016, Janelle is music director for the K-12 music program at Hinkletown Mennonite School in central PA. As an educator, Janelle is challenged daily to pass the joy of music-making on to the next generation through teaching and composing for students of all levels.
Janelle is a member of the American Society for Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and The National Association for Music Education (MENC).
When not composing or motivating students, she can be found traveling, hosting family and friends, and spending time enjoying life with her husband and daughters.
